What's This? The Space That Shaped Us
In our line of work, you tend to spend a lot of breath explaining to folks how unique you are, or defining — as they say in The Biz™ — your value proposition.
To be frank, we’re in the same boat as a lot of studios these days: shifting to a remote-first operation. And while that’s increasingly exciting, it can be hard to figure out how one of the most cherished things about our company plays a role for our remote teammates and clients alike: the studio space itself.
There are more than a few aspects of our Downtown Syracuse workspace that embody the spirit of our team better than any other “brand” element could, intentional or not. From the “Ah!”s and “Whoa!”s we typically get from first-time visitors to the comfortable hangs with return ones, we try to elicit the same emotion from the people we work with and the work itself.
So ten years in, we’re paying tribute to 130 Walton St. by waxing poetic about the vibe that’s rubbed off on us (or us on it?). At best, maybe this helps our remote partners grasp the sensibilities of our studio without seeing it in person.
At worst, now you know where we buy all our stuff.
Coffee (and tea!) is the uncontested lifeblood of our operation. Whether we’re griding beans, frothing milk, or coming back from a Kubal run, there’s always a discernible caramelized warmth in the air of our studio. We do our best work when it smells and sounds like a coffee shop in here.

At its best, music can spark creativity. At worst, it provides a steady heartbeat to keep us productive. Our studio-wide broadcast of chill tracks — and the occasional acoustic cover — immediately put everyone at ease.

In 2018, we turned in the corporate box lights we inherited for a set of warm, industrial pendants in what was arguably the biggest upgrade since we moved in. Now, every nook of our space has intentional, cozy lighting. Ahh.

But it truly is “the wood that makes it good” for us, where good = balance. It’s warm, so we can be cool elsewhere. It’s organic, so we can be manufactured otherwise. It’s always in style. What wood we do without it 😏?

Metal’s gonna last longer than just about anything in the shop. It’s not bold, it’s confident. It doesn’t get all dolled up, it just kinda is what it is. It’s raw, yet established. Pretty good choice for the thing we prop all our important stuff on.

But we’ve figured out a hack for these anxiety-inducing menaces: a burning wick. Just a stray glance at a flickering candle over on our coffee table says “everything’s going to be OK… unless you forget to put out that candle before you leave.”

As if hanging vibrant felt triangles on white walls wasn’t eye-catching enough, these puppies are some of the only non-neutral colors in the shop. Much like us, they provide the right amount of spirit to an otherwise buttoned-up feel.

For us, donuts are a welcome affront to the typical “good job” corporate handshake. We’ve made these containers of joy and edible high-fives a customary part of each project launch. And not one person hates that we do this.

Like most, we hang and display artwork as a means of inspiration for ourselves and a statement of what we think is in good taste. But it’s also a reminder to make work suitable for others to display or be inspired by.
