Ten years of Airy Open Cozy Coffeehouse Industrial Minimal Farmhouse Eclect-ish Upstate-y Joanna Gaines-y studio vibes

What's This?

The Space That Shaped Us

In our line of work, you tend to spend a lot of breath explaining to folks how unique you are, or defining — as they say in The Biz™ — your value proposition.

To be frank, we’re in the same boat as a lot of studios these days: shifting to a remote-first operation. And while that’s increasingly exciting, it can be hard to figure out how one of the most cherished things about our company plays a role for our remote teammates and clients alike: the studio space itself.

There are more than a few aspects of our Downtown Syracuse workspace that embody the spirit of our team better than any other “brand” element could, intentional or not. From the “Ah!”s and “Whoa!”s we typically get from first-time visitors to the comfortable hangs with return ones, we try to elicit the same emotion from the people we work with and the work itself.

So ten years in, we’re paying tribute to 130 Walton St. by waxing poetic about the vibe that’s rubbed off on us (or us on it?). At best, maybe this helps our remote partners grasp the sensibilities of our studio without seeing it in person.

At worst, now you know where we buy all our stuff.

Caffeine

01.
Sure, quality work and self-improvement are fine motivators. But have you ever tried an espresso macchiato?

Coffee (and tea!) is the uncontested lifeblood of our operation. Whether we’re griding beans, frothing milk, or coming back from a Kubal run, there’s always a discernible caramelized warmth in the air of our studio. We do our best work when it smells and sounds like a coffee shop in here.

Don’t use Starbucks Rewards on anything but a fancy Venti drink.

Fun Fact

Our “usuals”, according to the Starbucks app: Caffe Latte (Maribeth), Chai Latte w/ no water (Dan), Nitro Cold Brew w/ vanilla (Nate). Steve’s a Tim Horton’s guy because Canada.
Music

02.
For ten years, the hum of a chill beat has played a huge role in turning our “office” into a “studio”. Heck, music might be the unsung hero of Adjacent.

At its best, music can spark creativity. At worst, it provides a steady heartbeat to keep us productive. Our studio-wide broadcast of chill tracks — and the occasional acoustic cover — immediately put everyone at ease.

When you can’t decide what everyone wants to listen to, the answer is Yacht Rock

Fun Fact

Spotify says our most played song in 2021 was “Cherish” by Shrimpnose. None of us are familiar.

Light

03.
You can’t have that open and airy vibe without big windows. We’re spoiled to have them on three of our four walls, a certain rarity in Downtown Syracuse.

In 2018, we turned in the corporate box lights we inherited for a set of warm, industrial pendants in what was arguably the biggest upgrade since we moved in. Now, every nook of our space has intentional, cozy lighting. Ahh.

Hot Take

String lights on tall plants can happen any time of the year.

Fun Fact

Building safety code requires one of our pendants to be on at all times, even when we’re not there. We’re rooting for you, lowly LED bulb.
Wood

04.
Sorry, it’s absolutely wild how humans can make something from a forest (!) feel like it was intended to be indoors.

But it truly is “the wood that makes it good” for us, where good = balance. It’s warm, so we can be cool elsewhere. It’s organic, so we can be manufactured otherwise. It’s always in style. What wood we do without it 😏?

Deeper Dive

Hot Take

There’s nothing wrong with contrasting wood styles (reclaimed, light, dark).

Fun Fact

Maribeth’s Uncle Dave is responsible for various chairs, stools, and even our drafting table.

Metal

05.
You don’t mess with a pipe. That sucker’s about as no-nonsense as it gets.

Metal’s gonna last longer than just about anything in the shop. It’s not bold, it’s confident. It doesn’t get all dolled up, it just kinda is what it is. It’s raw, yet established. Pretty good choice for the thing we prop all our important stuff on.

Apple should ditch its obsession with silver aluminum.

Fun Fact

Our metal “Lucky” heart was made by the same person who outfits Pastabilities’ lovely interior.

Candles

06.
Sprints. Deadlines. Inbox not-quite-zero. That Slack notification sound. There’s no shortage of ticking time bombs hooked into the workday.

But we’ve figured out a hack for these anxiety-inducing menaces: a burning wick. Just a stray glance at a flickering candle over on our coffee table says “everything’s going to be OK… unless you forget to put out that candle before you leave.”

Hot Take

You can keep your floral scents. Give us tobacco, leather, and bourbon.

Fun Fact

We’ve never properly trimmed a wick or completely followed the provided candle care instructions 😬

Pennants

07.
Nothing says “Go Team!” like pennants, and ours champion eight core principles from the rafters of our studio.

As if hanging vibrant felt triangles on white walls wasn’t eye-catching enough, these puppies are some of the only non-neutral colors in the shop. Much like us, they provide the right amount of spirit to an otherwise buttoned-up feel.

Hot Take

Pennants & banners will stay in style for at least another 10 years.

Fun Fact

We’ve designed some for Hormel Foods, whose long tradition of pennants dates back to the 50’s.

Donuts

08.
If there’s one way our space lets its hair down, it’s typically with a brightly colored box of a dozen sprinkled pastries.

For us, donuts are a welcome affront to the typical “good job” corporate handshake. We’ve made these containers of joy and edible high-fives a customary part of each project launch. And not one person hates that we do this.

Deeper Dive

Hot Take

Donuts should have holes. If we wanted a filled donut, we’d eat a pie.

Fun Fact

We’ve coordinated (honestly countless) donut deliveries to six cities across the US + Canada.
Goods

09.
Much of our space is filled with things we like that other people make. But when we get to put our thumbprint on a few of those things? *chef’s kiss*

Slapping our logo on various “chotchkies” won’t get it done. We pursue clever and considered brand work on meticulously curated gear. Studio goods are a clear way to convey the bar is high for quality, tailored experiences.

Hot Take

Stop trying to invent the perfect tee. It’s a heather gray tri-blend.

Fun Fact

In 2021, we announced an umbrella for our goods initiative, aptly named Adjacent Design Goods.
Art

10.
As citizens of the web, we collect high-tech devices. As citizens of design, we collect expensive pictures on paper.

Like most, we hang and display artwork as a means of inspiration for ourselves and a statement of what we think is in good taste. But it’s also a reminder to make work suitable for others to display or be inspired by.
